Mujo reflects on the Buddhist idea of impermanence and nature’s allusiveness as expressed by poet and Buddhist monk Kamo-no-Chomei (1155-1216). Chomei reminds us of our vulnerability to the forces of nature and the vanity of human efforts.

The flowing river
never stops
and yet the water
never stays
the same.
Foam floats
upon the pools,
scattering, re-forming,
never lingering long.
So it is with man
and all his dwelling places
here on earth.
